Visit to Southwark College (Bermondsey)

During our visit to the Southwark College (18/05/2010), we observed the basic environment that the students had as their outside area. Which was very dry with dead plants and had alot of space but wasn't used effectively. We would find students sitting on the stair cases in the college buildings on a hot day, which shows that their current environment doesn't live up to their basic needs or brief specifications. It also sets a bad standard for the college's visual presentation, because the building interior was well designed making the outside appear less attractive and rarely used.

Below are lists of comments from the southwark students about our dome concept and what could be added. Also opinions on the underground concept:

• dome could be more natural looking
• the shape might cause a problem for people with a phobea
• there could be seats that people sit on and can swing from at the same time
• slides could be added to the physical structure

Underrground Concept Student comments

• Don't want it so exposed, where it has every window looking down at it
• open sky is suggestable more of a sheltered structure

Dome Development

Since there were mixed feeling from the students about the dome, i was wondering how to be more creative about it, here i implemented one of Pierre's ideas, and the material that Anton was talking about for the dome.

Presentation of Ideas

Today we met with our client, Southwark college. We presented our ideas and concepts to them in order to give them an insight into what direction we were heading in and whether they agreed with our plans for their college's outdoor open space.

Once done with the presenting, we sat down with the Southwark college students and discussed what route to take, based on the presentation they had just viewed. Some found our ideas of the sphere very interesting, whilst some others couldnt see the reason for having a sphere and the fact that the sphere would feel like they were indoors.

























We gained positive and some negative feedback, but overall very helpful feedback on where to go next with this project, we took from the meeting that we need to incorporate more graphics, such as signage into the open space instead of trying to be architects and we also learned we needed to make the overall space more "creative".

Meeting 16th May 2010

During the meeting we also ran through some new ideas, so we would have something more solid to present to our clients. We thought of using futuristic shapes (sphere) for the environment, to give it a fresher and more up to date look. Also elements from the Avatar fiolm was digust to be incorperated, based on the clients requirements. For the Southwark College we planned on taking anoth photos of the space, that we have to work with on the tuesday tour with Anastasios (YDP Manager).
With the new ideas that we had come up with, we took the capacity of how many students it will be able to fit into consideration.
The new concept that we generated is basically a giant spherical dome, where students came come in groups or as individuals to relax in an educated environment. The structure was to interpret a primary dome that has a link to seperate miniature domes. The primary dome was to have the key feature of a 360 degree screen, accessible for hard drives, laptops, CDs etc.

When it came to producing the proposal these were the aspects that we look at:

• Executive Summary - Analysis of Southwark College background information
• Current Situation - The condition of the college
• Target Audience - Focusing on a wide range of students and college visitors (from 16+)
• Project Goals - Create a new interest for students and give them a more relaxing environment to learn in as well

• Creative Strategy - What methods are we using to execute the concepts
